Pasadena Employment Lawyer

Pasadena has had its own citywide minimum wage ordinance since 2016, and unlike some local ordinances it applies to all businesses regardless of size.

Pasadena sets its own wage floor

Pasadena is one of only a handful of Los Angeles County cities with a minimum wage of its own.

The City Council adopted the ordinance on March 14, 2016, and the rate rises to $18.57 per hour effective July 1, 2026. It is administered by the City’s Planning & Community Development Department, Code Compliance Division, in coordination with the state Division of Labor Standards Enforcement.

Because there is no small-employer carve-out, the floor for work performed in Pasadena is the city’s rate, not the state’s.

Rates change annually; confirm the current figure with the City when a claim is assessed.

Where a Pasadena case is heard

Worth being careful here, and we would rather say so than guess.

The Superior Court’s own published sources are not consistent for Pasadena. Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(C) states that an unlimited civil action may not be filed in the Northeast District, while the Court’s Filing Court Locator returns two unlimited-civil locations for Pasadena ZIP codes — the Pasadena Courthouse at 300 East Walnut Street and the Alhambra Courthouse at 150 West Commonwealth.

Because those two sources conflict, we will confirm the correct filing location with the Clerk’s Office for your specific case rather than state one here. What is settled is that a Los Angeles County employment case may optionally be filed in the Central District at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse downtown under Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(B). Federal claims go to the Western Division courthouses in downtown Los Angeles.

Working in Pasadena

Pasadena’s employment base leans heavily toward scientific research and technology, engineering and professional services, health care, higher education, and finance and insurance.

Research and academic settings raise their own recurring issues: classification of postdoctoral and research staff, and accommodation in laboratory roles with genuine physical requirements.

Every claim has deadlines, and some are short. We go over yours in the first conversation.
